When the songs were completed at home, I had the feeling
this one could become something special already.
Bolthorn started with drums that surpassed all my expectations.
Compared to former albums, he got more time in advance,
and obviously he used this time to create a great conpect.
This doesn´t mean he added loads of complex aspects, but
always found the nearly perfect idea for the songs. Beside that
we had sufficient time to discuss several details during the
recording process as well. After the drums were recorded,
we – Patrick and me – went over trying several equipment
for the guitar sound. The amp was chosen soon, a nice Soldano,
and step by step we added the other parts, box, guitar, etc.
Recording the first e-guitar lines left me with ambivalent feelings,
but as soon as the 2nd guitar line was added, the sound began...well,
somehow to sway. It´s hard to describe with words when two sounds
conflate and blend to one, plus something beyond those two.
However, recording the e-guitars was an absolute joy to me,
seeing song by song rising. I´ve been looking for this since the
very beginning, maybe it´s just a detail, maybe even something
most people will not even notice. But to me it´s something I was
aspiring to, but also something I never expected to be able to realise.
The acoustic guitars have been an issue Patrick and me discussed
for a while, too, trying to find the perfect way adding them to the
e-guitars. Most of the songs contain acoustic guitars in one or another
way, mainly even giving an extra dimension to the e-guitars, sometimes
used for interludes as well. Without any doubts one of the most important
aspects for alot of the new songs, and it´s been quite a task to place
them into that important role without creating over-dominance.
Well, I guess the songs themselves are happy with the outcome,
and so I am. The keyboard was used rather sparingly this time,
compared with former albums, playing a less dominant role, mainly
laying behind and beyond the other instrument. This for example makes
strings beeing part of the whole, instead of beeing a protruding element on its own.
Some parts still needed somehow more dominant keyboard parts,
something you people might be used to if you are familiar with Falkenbach.
Talking about the screams means to talk about Tyrann.
Just as Bolthorn and Hagalaz, he got more time in advance than usual,
and to me his voice is simply irreplaceable if we´re
talking about screams for Falkenbach. As well as Bolthorn and Hagalaz,
he also came up with own ideas, for example different ways of phrasing
the lyrics.
Last but not least the clean vocals. We decided to record them not during
one session, but in between the other parts, changing from acoustic guitar to clean vocals,
to keyboard, over to choirs, and back to acoustic guitars etc.
This made us able to make up our minds about several ideas we had regarding those clean vocals,
and as far as I am concerned the result proved us right.
Choirs we used rather rarely this time, also most „lyric-vocals“ feature one or two
vocal lines, instead of three, four or even five, ´though some chosen parts still do.
We also used additional instruments here and then, but I am gonna leave
this issue to your ears, find our yourselves.
Each of the five former album is on its own somehow, with an own sound and character. To me they are like siblings in one or another way. That´s what differs them from the new album, I guess.
It´s just my very own view on it, however,
this one is the child of the 5 former albums to me. While they contributed
their very own characteristics, the new album as a whole is the offspring of it,
and this makes it something very own. I am not talking about better or worse,
not about beeing something totally different, as it isn´t. It´s different without beeing different, it´s the same without beeing the same. And as I mentioned already, all this might be something existing just in my own throughts. As usual, not everyone will like it, some may be bored or disappointed, each album left people with different thoughts and feelings in the end, and this one will do as well. But I am sure to some this one will be, well...relevant in some way.
It´s an album that left me with many different impressions and varying moods,
but all in a positive way. It lead us, Hagalaz, Tyrann, Bolthorn and me, to several ideas, plans and possible conclusions. We discussed playing live as well as quitting with this 6th album,
and probably nearly everything in between.
This issue got no final conclusion so far, and we will see. In any case this recording process moved me, as well as the others, and most of all the result did.
With this let me conclude: there is no way to find words to express my
gratitude to Bolthorn, Hagalaz and Tyrann. Beeing with me and Falkenbach
for more than 10 years now, they are simply indispensable. Knowing myself beeing a person that´s somehow hard to cope with sometimes, they have always been with me, not giving me up during hard times, and keeping me going throughout all those years somehow. To most of you people out there Falkenbach is Vratyas Vakyas, but Falkenbach wouldn´t be what it is without them, they are part of the Falkenbach line-up as well as me.
