Is it legal to record covers of songs for private use and a few handcopied tapes for close friends? Tribute No2 would come to mind: from the fanbase for the fanbase Und was ist nötig um in Deutschland legal(!) Lieder zu covern?

As far as I can say you´re free to record songs for yourself, but it´s not legal give away copies. The legal way was to get the permission (band, label) and to check the Gema-stuff.

That Gema-stuff is very confusing - it should be legal to copy music you bought for your friends, that's the reason why I'm paying Gema-fees at all when I buy an album. Or it used to be the reason... And do I need permission from the band AND the label? Or don't I need any permission at all, as long as the Gema-sh...rimp is "in order"? I can't imagine, that every Metallica-Coverband out there got a written permission from the band/label...

I´ve to concede I´am not 100% sure. As far as I know you have to get the permission of the band, at least this is one of the things you *should* do in my opinion, because the band created the song.
The permission of the label you need, because in most of all cases the label holds the copyrights.
Last but not least the Gema does not decide if you´re allowed to cover a track or not, you just have to inform them in written form and to pay for it. How much this is depends on several aspects.

One thing that confuses me is, that I can't find any Gema-Labels on my Falkenbach records... does this mean they are not "protected" by the Gema / not a member? Do I have to pay to Gema even though I'm covering songs of a non-member? I only know that I have to pay the Gema for a CD-production wheather I'm a member or not...
Vratyas himself said it was ok for him on ICQ, but that was before "Heralding" so I don't know, if he still remembers ^^

All the albums are copyright-protected. In Germany we´ve got the Gema, and they insist upon putting their logo on the CD/layout as far as I can say. But I don´t know about the other companies. NCR used to manufacture the CDs in the Netherlands (Stemra instead of Gema there), and NR manufactures the CDs in Austria (again another company).
If you cover a song of a band that is not part / member of the Gema (or any other company like Gema) you don´t have to pay of course.
